Home Made Snorkel

General

Instead of buying one of the gay looking ARB snorkels, try building your own home made snorkel for your vehicle. If you build your own snorkel, you will save a couple hundred bucks and end up with something that is just as good. Now I'm not talking about building your own diving equipment, that would just be stupid. Though you could probably win some darwin awards with your homemade dive tank made out of a propane tank.

So if your thinking about building your own snorkle, here are some good write-ups that I found useful. I will be posting my own instruction on how I did my friends next week. Were still getting together the materials and deciding whether to do a hummer style snorkel on his jeep, or if we will do an ARB style snorkel

Homeade Snorkel TJ

Jeep Snorkle - Make your own (freecarkits.com)
"I’m not a daily mudder, in fact hate mud, but I’ve come close to testing the limits of the current intake system, and it only takes 2 Tsp of water to destroy an engine. Also, a cold air system would be nice to have, and I needed to install the welder too."

Cherokee Snorkel

Homebrew 3" ABS Snorkel - Good Looking! (pirate4x4.com)
"The snorkel is basically constructed from 3" flexible aluminum ducting, and 3" ABS pipe."

Homemade Snorkel Project

Do it Yourself Snorkel Project (bc4x4.com)
"The premise of a snorkel is obvious; move your air intake up higher by relocating the stock intake. To do this you need to have some kind of filter box that has both an inlet and an outlet (to allow filtered air to get to the engine). This needs to all be connected using air tight fittings. It took me all of an hour to decide on the basic set up."

Jeep In cab snorkel

Custom Deep Water Air Intake - in cab snorkel (madxj.com)
"After seeing the deep-water snorkels on the market I knew that something like that was needed. The only thing is that I don't need a snorkel that would allow the Jeep to cross streams up to its roofline on my daily driver and the price was a turn off on top of that. So I came up with my own system for about $11.00."

Grand Cherokee Snorkel Homeade

Grand Cherokee Snorkel How-To (Jeephorizons.com)
"As you may know the snorkel for the Jeep Grand Cherokee is expensive and hard to find. I hate to spend my money on parts that cost a lot and give me little by way of return.. Meaning, why spend $400 when I can spend $40? So when it came time to put a snorkel on my rig"

Jeepaholics Homeade Jeep YJ Snorkel

Do It Yourself Cheap Snorkel (jeepaholics.com)
"Well I made this snorkel about two years ago now, and I figured since so many people have asked about it, I would go ahead and do a write up. Now, as I said, its been a while since I put this together, so the prices may not be totally accurate, but I pieced it together for around 40 bucks or so."

I would honestly avoid the ARB style as much as you can, and go for the hummer look. The hummer style snorkel is less prone to damage and is more effective in my opinion. I hope these awesome write-ups I've linked can help you guys.
